TechSmith Corporation has been working for more than two decades in the screen-capturing and screen-casting software industry. The enterprise has developed some of the most popular screen-capturing tools like Snagit and Camtasia for both commercial and home users.
Jing was a screen-casting program launched by the corporation in 2007. Jing was a trailblazer of its time because it enabled users to take still and moving shots of their computers screens to save them on their devices or to upload them on the web and FTP servers. Jing works on both Windows and macOS. A couple of years ago, TechSmith Corporation changed the name of Jing.
It is now called TechSmith Capture and its last stable release was released nearly four years ago. It now only works on Windows 10. TechSmith Capture is free to use and you can download it from here. Since this screen-capturing software is still known by its former name (Jing), we will also stick to that name in this review.
How to Install Jing?
Jing is available on TechSmith's website. Click on this link and you will be directed to this page.
Click on the Free Download tab and you will see the below page.
Click on Windows Download if you are using any version of Windows 10. Upon clicking on this tab, nearly 14 MB setup will be downloaded on your system.
Click on the executable Setup file, the above license agreement window will appear. Check on "Yes, I accept…" and continue.
You need to create a free account with TechSmith to download this screen-capturing and screen-recording software on your device. You can also use your Google ID for signing up. Within a couple of seconds after signing up, the below floating widget will appear on your screen.
This is the default window of Jing or TechSmith Capture.
Uses of Jing
Like any good screen-capturing and screen-recording tool, you can use Jing for various applications.
For Taking Screenshot with Precision
In many professional environments, you need to take snippets of the screen with the utmost precision. Jing enables it. Its selection cursor features pixel coordinates and a magnifier that allow you to take the exact screen snippet you want to capture.
For Annotating and Labeling Captured Images
Default Windows screen-capturing applications only provide basis highlighting and annotating features. Jing does better than that. It allows users to highlight, label, and annotate taken screenshots in different colors. These editing features make Jing a suitable screen-capturing application if you are taking screen snippets for internal correspondence, presentations, and visual guides, etc.
For Screen Recording
Whether you need to record your screen to display certain animated processes to your team or to make video tutorials and guides, you can use Jing. Its screen-recording feature allows you to capture video of your screen both with the system and microphone audio.

How to Use Jing?
Using Jing is easy and doesn't require any extensive practice. Even if you are using a third-party screen-capturing and screencasting software for the first time, you can ace Jing's application after reading this section. For this Jing user guide, we will use TechSmith's homepage as the screen example.
The above image shows the TechSmith homepage in the background and Jing's floating widget on the foreground. When you click on the red Capture button on the widget, the selection cursor appears with pixel measurement and a magnifier. Also, the screen dims just like it happens when you are about to select a snippet in the Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch.
Select the part of the screen you want to capture. Once you select the intended part, you will see a window similar to the above image: the selected section appears bright, the rest of the screen is dim and a taskbar appears below the selected part.
This is the main taskbar of Jing. From here, you can select whether you want to capture the still image of the selected part or record its video. You can also manually change the selected area by entering the screen resolution values. From here, you can also restart the selection process or go back to the main floating widget.
Using Jing for Taking Screenshot
Let's first discuss how you can make the most of Jing for its screen-capturing feature.
Click on the Camera tab and Jing will take the screenshot of the selected region and will open in its Image Preview.
That's how an image opens in the Jing Image Preview. Here, you can edit and share the taken screenshot.
Editing Screenshots in Jing
This is the main editing bar of Jing's Image Preview. Let's dissect the options given here one at a time.
Color
From here, you can select the color for all the editing features (arrow, callout, shape, highlights) given on the bar.
Arrow
As the name implies, this option lets you draw arrows on the taken screenshot. You can use it to point out particular content and graphics on the taken screenshot.
Callout
This option allows you to add text to the taken screenshot in rectangular boxes. Unlike many free screen-capturing tools, here you can change the font and size of the text as well.
Shape
You can also accentuate the elements of the screenshot by enclosing them in rectangular boxes.
Highlights
Jing image editor also lets you highlight the content on the taken screenshot through rectangular selection.
Using Jing for Screen Recording
Very few free third-party applications offer seamless screen-recording and Jing is one of them.
In the above example, we have recorded the screen while TechSmith's promotional video is running on it.
In Jing screen-recording, you get 3 seconds delay to align your screen with the recording. As you can see on this screen-recording taskbar, it also features a webcam icon that is currently crossed. But when you are using a webcam and want to record its footage along with the screen you can use this feature. Also, you can enable and disable the recording of the microphone and system audio from here.
Sharing Screenshots and Screen Recording from Jing
When you will capture or record the screen, you will see this slider on the bottom right of the Preview window. Besides copying and saving, you can also upload the taken screenshot and video to TechSmith's Screencast platform. It is an online database that you get when you sign up with TechSmith.
When you will click on Upload to Screencast, you will see the below window.
You can see that the Jing creates a sharable link to your file. When you upload the file on the Screencast, it also generates an embedded code of the link for your WordPress and other CMS uploading requirements.
Jing Alternatives
Many third-party screenshot tools can be used in place of Jing. Among premium screen-capturing applications, we have TechSmith's other product Snagit. PicPick can also be used to capture and annotate screenshots. In free applications, Greenshot, LightShot, and ShareX are some suitable options.

If you want an application that can both capture and record screen without any one-time or recurring fee, Jing is probably the best option available on the internet right now.
TechSmith has been offering Jing as a free application since its development. Even after the name change, Jing (TechSmith Capture) is still free to use. As of now, Jing is only available in the installable application setup. The developer hasn't created any portable variant or web browser extension for Jing.
Conclusion
Jing is a great option for taking screenshots and screen-recording for all those individual users who can't afford a premium third-party application. Jing or TechSmith Capture comes with reasonable editing and annotating features. Also, the online database and shareable links are impressive add-ons of this freemium app. It is also great for personal, non-commercial users because it doesn't take too much space and computing power to run. You can install it on any PC, given that it is using Windows 10.
