Best overall

Everlane

The Cotton Crew from Everlane is the standard white tee of your dreams, with a versatile silhouette constructed from lightweight Supima cotton fabric.

Everlane is King of Basics as far as direct-to-consumer brands go, so it's not a surprise that the brand has nailed the basic white T-shirt. The Cotton Crew is a standout from Everlane's T-shirt offerings.

It's a basic crew neck tee with a slim, but not tight, fit and short sleeves. Manufactured in Los Angeles, The Cotton Crew is made of 100% lightweight Supima cotton and retails for $18.

The care instructions for this shirt are simple: machine wash cold, tumble dry low. It's available in sizes XXS through XL. Thanks to Everlane's model of transparency, you can check out a profile of the factory where your T-shirt was made. We at Insider Reviews love Everlane's white T-shirts, too.

Pros: Slim, "gamine" fit, lightweight, easy care instructions, made in Los Angeles

Cons: Some reviewers said the fabric is thinner than expected

Best V-neck

Madewell

The Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee is an easy, breezy top that you'll want to pair with everything from denim shorts to blazers.

I live for a V-neck T-shirt. The Madewell Whisper Cotton V-Neck Pocket Tee is a slouchy-yet-polished iteration that looks good with absolutely everything from denim cut-offs to an oversized blazer.

I've owned many Madewell V-necks and can attest to their quality. They last through many washes (truly — I abused mine in the laundry room in my college dorm) and look fantastic on the body. This one has a bit of a longer cut for easy tucking and a cool, slightly oversized breast pocket. The size range is also decent, running from XXS to 3X.

Insider Reviews reporter Remi Rosmarin loves this T-shirt, too, for its low price and lightweight fabric.

Pros: Durable, breathable fabric, sizes run from XXS to 3X

Cons: V might be too low on some people

Best fitted T-shirt

Mott & Bow

The Mott & Bow Marcy Fitted Crew is on the pricier side, but it's well worth the cost for the velvet soft pima cotton and modal blend.

I don't always advocate spending more than $20 for basics, but if you're looking to splurge on a white T-shirt that will last forever while looking and feeling great, consider the Mott & Bow Marcy Fitted Crew.

This is your basic white T-shirt with a few details that make it stand out. The fabric is an ultra-soft blend of pima cotton and modal. It's preshrunk for the perfect fit right from the box and is just the right length for tucking into a pair of jeans or trousers.

The top is highly rated on the Mott & Bow website, based on 189 reviews. One shopper writes, "I have 4 colors of the Fitted V-Neck. They wear so well and maintain their shape. Not too long but not too short as well."

Pros: Very soft pima cotton and modal blend, fitted, preshrunk

Cons: Pricey, runs small

Best boxy T-shirt

Richer Poorer

The Richer Poorer Pima Boxy Crop Tee hits right at the waist for a fit that's not too high or too low — perfect for an everyday, relaxed feel.

Richer Poorer is on a mission to elevate all of your everyday basics. It's no wonder then that everything this California-born brand makes is effortlessly cool.

The Boxy Crop Tee is one of the styles that's helped the brand gain a cult-following, and for good reason. The shirt features a crew neck and looser sleeves for a relaxed silhouette. A slightly cropped treatment upgrades the basic crew neck T-shirt. The crop isn't too high or too low; it hits right at the waist for a universally flattering fit that won't make you feel exposed.

The shirt is made with 100% organic cotton and treated with a silicone wash, so it already feels broken in the first time you wear it.

We're also big fans of the Everlane Cotton Box-Cut Tee. While the Richer Poorer iteration is a little more expensive, the shirts are slightly thicker which makes them more durable and less likely to show sweat stains. For that, we'd pay the extra price, but if those aren't big concerns of yours, Everlane's is a nice, affordable alternative. —Remi Rosmarin

Pros: Flattering fit, super-soft fabric, good for petites

Cons: Crop may be too short for longer torsos

Best splurge T-shirt

Shopbop

The Cotton Citizen Sydney T-Shirt is pricey, but its ultra-soft fabric will only get better with time.

If my budget allowed, I'd only wear Cotton Citizen shirts. I truly have never put on a more comfortable T-shirt in my life— light as a feather and superiorly soft.

A combination of modal and cotton is responsible for the shirt's lightweight, breathable construction. A crew neck, longer sleeves, and just enough slouch give this T-shirt an oversized, relaxed fit.

If you're going to spend $90 on a plain T-shirt, you're probably going to want to take extra measures to keep it in good condition. Cotton Citizen's super lightweight fabric is what gives the shirts a luxuriously soft feel, but it can also make the pieces more prone to holes. I'd suggest putting this shirt through the wash in a delicates bag, so it doesn't catch on any zippers or buttons. —Remi Rosmarin

Pros:Really soft, lightweight and breathable, comfortable

Cons: Thinner fabric can be prone to holes, expensive

Best oversized T-shirt

Universal Standard

The Universal Standard Tee Rex boasts a slightly oversized, universally flattering fit for all women, with sizes ranging from 00 to 40.

Truth be told, the best white T-shirt is pretty subjective. When it comes to clothing, most of us have pretty strong preferences about what styles we find most comfortable and flattering.

Objectively speaking, though, Universal Standard boasts the biggest size range of any brand on this list. Women sized 00 to 40 can find their perfect white T-shirt among the brand's selection of shirts.

The Tee Rex made it to this list because it checks all the boxes: a slightly oversized fit, soft fabric, simple silhouette, and comfortable construction. A combination of Peruvian cotton, modal, and elastane make the shirt soft and stretchy. A crew neck, curved hem, and lengthened sleeves give the shirt a drapey shape that won't drown you in fabric. Size up for a looser fit or down for a more slimming one.

I tried this tee and loved the feel of this fabric and the shape of the shirt— the curved hem is perfect for tucking into jeans. Ultimately, I probably would have sized up so the sleeves were a little looser, but that's all a matter of preference. —Remi Rosmarin

Pros: Soft fabric, drapes nicely, comes in many sizes

Cons: Pricier, fitted sleeves

What else we considered

Re/Done Boxy Tee
Re Done
  • Re/Done Heritage Cotton 1950s Boxy Tee ($90): Re/Done tees came up time and time again in my research, but the drawback is that they are very expensive. However, if you're looking for a more upmarket version, give the brand's 1950s Boxy Tee a shot.
  • Pact Featherweight Crew Neck Tee ($20): Made with organic cotton in a fair trade factory, and priced at an affordable $20, Pact's basic crew neck proves that sustainable can be affordable and super comfy too.
  • Entireworld Recycled Cotton Easy T ($35):Entireworld's cozy tees and sweats have garnered a ton of hype over the past few months, with many of the styles selling out. The Easy T is super lightweight, has a loose, casual fit, and is made from 100% recycled cotton.
